Pie Invention Challenge
For our final cooking day, each pupil in Year 6, invented and cooked their own pie!

We used the eatwell guide to make our pies balanced, which meant that they included a lot of vegetables & a small portion of protein.

We made our own shortcrust pastry and learned to make a roux sauce, using butter and flour. Then we used our bridge hold and claw grip to cut our ingredients safely.

There was a real range of pies: from chicken, sweetcorn and mushroom: spinach and garlic with cheese sauce and even a breakfast pie which included, boiled egg, bacon, sausage, and baked beans!

When we had assembled our ingredients, we rolled out our pastry and topped our pies. We each decorated our pie so we could recognise it and we basted them with a little milk.

We washed up and cleaned the tables while our pies were cooking, then sat down to admire them and wait for them to cool.

We all learned a lot and enjoyed making our pies and plan to make some more at home.

Savoury Tarts
For our Spring cooking day, year 6 learned to make savoury tarts. We used the bridge hold to cut safely with sharp knives, and Ms Marsden taught us a new hold called the claw grip. You can learn how to cut safely HERE. We then made a mixture of egg and milk, to make our tarts a bit like mini quiches.

We rolled out some shop bought pastry and cut out 6 circles each, then we popped them into a tart tray, added our chopped vegeatbles and grated cheese ad topped each one with a little of the egg mixture.

The tarts looked gret and tasted even better!
If you'd like to try them at home, the recipe was in 26th January's newsletter, which you can download HERE.

Pizza
For our autumn cooking day, year 6 made pizzas. We even made our own bases. We used lots of maths skills, using scales to weigh the flour and cheese and measuring jugs and spoons to accurately measure the liquids. We rubbed in the flour and butter and then added the liquids. When we'd kneded the dough a little, we rolled it out , making sure that it didn't stick to the table. Then Ms Marsden taught us to cut safely using sharp knives, using the bridge hold.
